Type: Urban Connectivity Project, Linking and improving neglected urban waterways to local communities
*This Project was part of the Master’s Thesis Programme
The primary focus for this project was to explore the possibilities for transforming the industrially induced neglect of a key suburban waterway into a new social and recreational haven for community interactions and activity. The explorations revealed the Porirua Stream to be a significant influence in partitioning the local suburban community, which limited access to the urban stream domain. A series of linkages and bridges were established in the proposal to link these partitioned networks together. These bridges acted as circulation nodes that formed a natural transition between the suburban streets the stream’s domain.
One key feature involved transforming a existing sports ground was transformed into an amphitheatre to offer more activities. Adapting this ground to accommodate flooding was an important element as it offered the removal of intrusive stopbanks that prevented pedestrian access.
